The City – Session Victim & Erobique with Jamie Lloyd

Session Victim and Erobique join forces once again for a beautiful cover version of Mark Almond‘s “The City” starring Jamie Lloyd’s enticing vocals and featuring Linnart Ebel on rhythm guitar.

Ever since Hauke Freer stumbled over Mark Almond‘s final studio album Other People’s Rooms at Montreal record store Death Of Vinyl a few years ago, the pair would regularly finish DJ nights with this 1978 recording of their hit single “The City” – and since then, the idea of recording their own rendition had been tossed around frequently. Carsten “Erobique” Meyer was not the first but really the duo’s only choice to see this through and well, just listen to the impeccable Rhodes/Clavinet combination he came up with.

However, it is Sydney’s Jamie Lloyd who steals the show and takes the song into his realm, putting his very own stamp and character on this certified classic. Long time collaborator Linnart Ebel completes the band with his ever subtle rhythm guitar. The two, three, four, five man house, not house band branches out for all the right reasons and this is the result.

Beats From the Quarantine – Third Attempt

Third Attempt from Tromsø, Norway has come up with a new album and after a few listens it’s been promoted to the classic heads section of my collection. I’m filing this with my down tempo dons like K&D, David Holmes and Thievery Corporation so you know it’s top quality. Expect jazzy beats and breaks, enigmatic samples and smoky slo-mo atmospherics.

‘How to turn a moment of worry, uncertainty and isolation into something of a warm-hearted, creative catalyst? How to build bridges when humanity in its entirety seems caught in the nets of decisively painful crossroads? Written and recorded during the lockdown that’s put our civilisations to sleep for the past year, the new album from Third Attempt comes as a much welcome balmy treat to our existentially dreadful times.’

Two Crowns EP – Session Victim

We normally think of Session Victim as big room house artists, but their previous release and now this EP on Delusions Of Grandeur suggest a change direction for their productions, and it’s sounding pretty good to me.

This EP gives us three original tracks which move smoothly from the low slung funky wobble of the title track with it’s stabbing analogue synths and house not house live drum groove, through to the lush, expansive sounds of Village Youth.

Once again, Session Victim have created a collection of tracks which give us a sense of nostalgia for early 90’s Fila Brazilia/Solid Doctor records on the influential Porky label or classic cuts from Kruder & Dorfmeister. A world where trippy spoken word samples, cut up breakbeats, deep pads and sine wave basslines live in perfect harmony and a sense of optimism flows through every note. Let’s face it, we can all do with some of that right now!
