Starry-eyed sunset disciple James Bright makes a welcome return with his latest blissfully refined studio offering, ‘Raise’, which comes out courtesy of brand new label Sveva Music. The shimmering cosmic reggae hybrid features an exquisite vocal performance from Zoe Devlin Love and comes complete with an expert set of remixes from perennially on-point Balearic disco maestro, Pete Herbert, and White Island sonic luminary, Steve ‘Afterlife’ Miller. Pete’s remix and dub are the pick of the bunch for me, piano lead mid tempo chuggers built around the core acid throb of the original, very nice. Hot on the heels of his early Summer Betamax EP, prolific balearic producer James Bright is back with his new 5 tracker, the Zooniverse EP on Quattro Music. His trademark shimmering, summery sounds are showcased here, with those bubbling, hypnotic acid lines never far away.
Head nodding chuggers for headphone hedonism are the elements of this universe, rather than big room bangers. We can all extend our Summer season with these downtempo poolside classics.
The escapist ambience starts with opener ‘Timelapse’, a cinematic glide with echoes of the Thievery Corporation. Then onto title track ‘Zooniverse’, with it’s brooding acidic throb. Track three is ‘Patchouli’ a deeper, swirling trip of psychedelic dub, and a personal favourite for me. ‘Freq Out’ is next, a mid tempo dancefloor cut with nagging 303’s and atmospheric synth lines. Finally JB lets us down gently with closer ‘Cosmos,’ a slo-mo tropical journey, with ringing guitars, merimbas and yes, that essential squelch.
Top drawer balearic business, an essential purchase, download or stream.
I’ve been seeing more and more quality releases from north west based producer James Bright over the last few months, including releases on Eclectics and Midnight Riot, and mostly recently his excellent track ‘Shimmer’ on the Sol d’en Serra EP on Higher Love Recordings.
He’s about to drop a new six tracker on Danish label Quattro Music, the Betamax EP is set for release on June 6th. If you’re a fan of the summery sounds of labels like Music for Dreams or International Feel then this is one to check. All super Balearic chuggers destined to soundtrack beach bars and pool parties, it’s a really strong package with guitar driven & percussive ‘Groves’ and loon bird & gamelan bubbler ‘Flying Tiger’ among personal favourites. Have a listen to opening track, the super mellow sunset atmospherics of ‘You and Me’ below.
