Everybody’s favourite month of every Ibiza season has long deserved an adequate ode, and here it is in full dub version! Most of the tourists are gone, the beaches are empty, the water as clear as the skies and the sun sets in an even more magnificent way. Maybe that’s why there’s a certain amount of sweet, almost tropical melancholy in the air while she does. And chances are it sounds a little something like this… down on that beach. Do you remember? Never a cloudy day!
This is Afterlife’s late Summer Balearic update for 2021, and it’s quite a package. Atmospheric title track, Moksha open the set with its breath of mysterious voices, wigged out jazz and twisted techno vibes, an after dark soundtrack for sure. Ad Astra follows up with a delicate blissed out pulse of poolside melody. Abraxas is next up with it’s dreamy dubwise slo-mo beats. Completing the four tracker is another dub & delay heavy collaboration with Ken Fan, the Cafe del Mar resident under the name of Dreadbox. Essential listening for anyone hoping to make the Summer last that little bit longer…
Here’s a new super chilled 30 min sunset mix, posted as part of Cafe Mambo and Absolut‘s Sunset DJ competition. If they’re going to fly out some lucky sunseeker to play in Ibiza next month it might as well be me right? If you’ve enjoyed the mix give it a repost & favourite and maybe I’ll buy you a shot of Hierbas down at Cafe Mambo one day soon 🙂 M.
It’s tricky to capture a mood in such a short mix, but I tried to get a flavour of what I’d want to hear in a longer sunset session. So there’s vintage Balearic classics from Joan Bibiloni and the San Sebastian Strings, fab new school Balearic from Nick & Samantha (out now on Chris Coco‘s label), Cantoma and Bongo Entp. Then closing out the set with the timeless, emotive beauty of David Sylvian‘s ‘Let the Happiness in’ as the sun dips below the horizon.
Cicada Interlude – Nick and Samantha The Gypsy Camp – The San Sebastian Strings Accadde a Bali – Arawak Back Into Daylight Ft. Quinn Lamont Luke – Cantoma Baby Song- Bongo Entp Summer Is Here – Nick and Samantha Sa Fosca – Joan Bibiloni Let The Happiness In – David Sylvian
It was an honour to be invited to create a mixtape for the lovely crew at the Dartmouth Arms / Disappearing Dining Club, as they’ve previously shared mixes from some top selectors like Ray Mang, Phil Cooper, Moonboots, Chris Coco, Pete Gooding, Phil Mison and their excellent residents Neil Thornton and Stuart Langley. Their taste in music is matched the quality of their venue and the hospitality they offer, all top quality from the vintage Celestion soundsystem to the stylish modern cooking, get along if you get the chance. It’s two hours of super chilled, beautiful music, enjoy…

This is what happens when two original Balearic heads meet up in the name of dub, sunsets & left field Ibiza.
A playful, almost innocent reggae riddim with a jazzy saudade twist, created in just a few summer nights on the axis of goodness linking up central London and the hills of Ibiza’s very own San Juan.
It is believed that on the night of summer solstice (aka “Noche de San Juan”), paranormal events are more likely to occur… as in this shortest night of the year, humans make contact with pagan gods by jumping over huge bonfires. A local Spanish tradition welcoming the summer, always related to fire & water.
Chris Coco and George Solar transformed those Ibicenco vibes into sound this year, with a little help from members of the infamous Ibiza based Dubtropical Allstars band. The beginning of something beautiful indeed – thanks to the music & fire gods. Version galore, play it some more!
The latest release from the collaboration between Chris Coco and Luca Averna, with the delicate, atmospheric guitar work of Micko Roache, it’s a timeless, shimmering slice of Balearic perfection. Surely destined to soundtrack sunsets all Summer long, an essential addition to your collection.
I’ve been seeing more and more quality releases from north west based producer James Bright over the last few months, including releases on Eclectics and Midnight Riot, and mostly recently his excellent track ‘Shimmer’ on the Sol d’en Serra EP on Higher Love Recordings.
He’s about to drop a new six tracker on Danish label Quattro Music, the Betamax EP is set for release on June 6th. If you’re a fan of the summery sounds of labels like Music for Dreams or International Feel then this is one to check. All super Balearic chuggers destined to soundtrack beach bars and pool parties, it’s a really strong package with guitar driven & percussive ‘Groves’ and loon bird & gamelan bubbler ‘Flying Tiger’ among personal favourites. Have a listen to opening track, the super mellow sunset atmospherics of ‘You and Me’ below.
The new decade dawns with a message of love and hope from Balearic envoy Phil Mison and his fourth LP under the Cantoma moniker. Joined by old friends and new acquaintances, Señor Misono draws on a lifetime of record collecting, selection and songwriting to pack ‘Into Daylight’ with the essence of the Balearic movement, from the Café del Mar and beyond.
The album features guests Quinn Lamont Luke, Hush Forever, Suad Khalifa, Apres Midi, David Philips and Luna Asteri and was recorded between London and Barcelona.
Gorgeous, super slo-mo sunset balearic ambient piece here from Faint Waves, lead track on a new three track EP ‘Sol d’en Serra’ from new label Higher Love Recordings. It’s a cool package with a fine dreamhouse bubbler ‘Shimmer’from James Bright and cinematic atmospherics from Audiocluster. Out 27/4/20
