TONE CONTROL – Illusion (Theo Parrish Remix)

King Theo has landed! You can bet 12 years ago when WOLF Music started the label, they never thought they’d be welcoming certified royalty Theo Parrish to lay down a remix on a release. And what better track for Theo to work his magic on, than the deep depths of  Tone Control’s 2008 classic – ‘Illusion’.

Buttery, soulful deepness, ‘Illusion’ has it all, hitting you right in that soft spot – pure eyes closed business. Late night, early morning, peak time, take your pick. It was an instant classic when it was released, with Theo regularly drawing for it at his legendary Plastic People residency.

Now sit the man Theo down in the studio with the stems for a track he clearly loves and what do you get? A slice of Theo genius no doubt. His ‘SS Translation’ clocks in at nearly 10 minutes, building, twisting, and turning in a way only Theo knows how. Restructuring and re-layering the elements to squeeze every last drop of emotion out of Tone Control’s track, Theo’s delectable bass synth playing, at times haunting keys and fresh drum programming give a rawness and punch to the cut that channel that inner Theo spirit in style.

Flip it to find Tone Control’s mix of ‘Illusion’, Simon Finnegan and Marcus Harris’ biggest hit that’s still played today by the likes of Kyle Hall, Jay Daniel and Kerri Chandler. In fact, who better to talk this track up than Kerri himself, with a quote from back in the day:

“…It is one of my favorite songs. Even the way the song is put together is honestly what house is all about for me. It’s got every element I love in one song, dope bass line, a different deep vocal, the sounds are hot (drums, even the way he made them swing, that Rhodes) all of it… Everyone I play it for they freak out about it.”

All in all, this 12 is a must-have for those that like to get down! Listen / Buy here via Phonica – out 13/5/22

We spoke to the team behind this project just before release day…

Please introduce yourself to our readers.

Hi, we’re Simon Finnegan and Marcus Harris from Tone Control.

When did you first release Illusion?

We first released “Illusion” in 2008, on our own label, Tone Control Music. The music and lyrics are written by us, Simon and Marcus. The vocals are performed by James B. Coleman – we recorded them in our then living room-studio at our flat on Pentonville Road in King Cross. The Rhodes are played by Andy Badderly. The siren on the second chorus appears courtesy of Islington Police.

Who was playing it back in the day? How did it become such a cult classic?

It was played by loads of DJs. The original 12” represented a few UK producers, and each mix had its place. Our mix, the original, was picked up by Kerri Chandler, Tony Humphries and later, Theo Parrish.

How did it feel when you found out Kerri Chandler loved it?

Simon: I was at Southport Weekender, dancing in the Power House (a room for ~2,500 people) at about 6am, when Kerri played it. It blew my mind. I ran around telling everyone, “its our track”!

Marcus: I was in bed and received a very early morning call from an excited Simon telling me the good news.  I was chuffed as I love Kerri Chandler’s music.

So Theo Parrish played it at Plastic People. Were you ever there when he played it?

Simon: Yep, a few times. We used to go there regularly for his residency – as it really was the best club, and had great sound. In fact, I was there the night Marcus met his wife… and their eldest son is called, Theo!

Marcus: All true! Theo was indeed playing the night I met my wife.  Simon had persuaded me to come out and I am now very glad he did!

How did you hook up with the Wolf Boys?

Simon: I met Matt and Stu around 2004 at Southport Weekender – I remember giving them demos and mixes on cd – as you did back then. In fact Matt helped me get one of our projects on to an early digital download store, and I regularly listened to Stu’s mixes that he posted on the Southport Forum – we had a similar liking for a broad range of styles.

How did you make the Theo Remix happen?

Simon: It’s been really nice, working with Stu and Matt – We were discussing potential remixers, and I mentioned that Theo used to play it regularly, so Stu reached out to him… the rest is history

What did you think when you first heard his mix?

Well, we’re big fans, so the first thought was, “this is classic Theo!” While also being chuffed that he kept and highlighted some nice parts from the original, while adding his own jazzy keys…

If you didn’t get Theo Parrish to remix it, who else would you have got to do it?

We both love the Detroit and Atlanta sounds. We discussed producers like Kai Alce, Stefan Ringer, Kemit. From the UK, artists like K15, Dego.

What does Tone Control have in the pipeline?

After several years hiatus for kids, bereavement and life, we’ve been back in the studio recording again. With a growing collection of instrumentals, we have some sessions lined up with James B. Coleman and other musicians and vocalists we’re fans of, so keep ’em peeled for more Tone Control sounds.

EDDIE C Presents L.J SIMON ft. IDRISS – I WONNA KNOW / RENDEZ-VOUS

Up next on Soul Clap Records, Eddie C introduces us to Berlin’s L.J Simon & Idriss.

Berlin based Canadian, Eddie C, is known for his raw yet sophisticated approach to production. With countless releases and remixes on Jiscomusic, Endless Flight, Crue-L, Sleazy Beats, Wolf Music, 7 Inches of Love & Home Taping, his eclectic and passion-fuelled DJ sets have gained him a cult following worldwide. You could well describe him as one of the slo-mo disco edits scene’s heaviest hitters with his lush, deep, and generous grooves.

LJ Simon met Eddie C while they were both residents at Neue Odessa Bar in Berlin. Simon played Eddie his original versions over lunch one sunny afternoon in 2020. Eddie took the parts back to the studio and reworked them into something that would fit into the nights he was playing at Neue Odessa.

Algerian vocalist Idriss had long and winding journey to Berlin, travelling to the city from Algeria. His journey took him to Turkey, and from there he travelled to Greece in an overloaded boat that sank in the middle of the ocean. Thankfully he was rescued by the Greek authorities, although he was later forced to endure even more adversity, before eventually making his way to Berlin.

It was in Berlin that he met and formed a strong and joyous bond with LJ Simon. Both artists sharing a passion for the boogie-funk vibe, and so the collaboration began. The result is two cuts of sun-drenched, sexy, low-slung, goodness. It’s a vinyl only, special edition 7”, centred around this delectable pair of Eddie C’s disco flips.

RELEASE DATE: 6th MAY – Buy / Stream link here…

We had a chat with Eddie just prior to release day…

  1. Please introduce yourself to our readers Eddie

Ex-cross-country-ski and mountaineering enthusiast, part-time DJ, full time nomad, seeker of nice times.

  1. Tell us where you are based and where you are from?

Currently somewhere in the Yucatan peninsula where it is too hot for me. I’m originally from Southern Ontario not far from Toronto and Detroit. I think I lived in Berlin for most of the past decade but that may have been a dream.

  1. There is clearly a sound that is Eddie C. How would YOU define that sound?

That’s good news! If you’re talking about my productions I would say slow speed with intensity. My DJ style is also peppered with great intensity but is often fast.

  1. Who are the artists that have inspired you over time?

Far too many to mention. Public Enemy’s production team The Bomb Squad inspired me the most in the beginning. Richie Hawtin was pretty important for a good chunk of time in the 90s. Dilla, Madlib and DJ Premier. Sly and Robbie. Jon Hassell and Brian Eno. Baldelli and Harvey. Lindstrom and Prins Thomas. Kenji Takimi and Tetsu Inoue. Theo Parrish and Kenny Dixon Jr.

  1. If you had to pick a genre to ‘listen’ over everything else, what would it be?

Ambient or anything from Detroit regardless of genre.

  1. If someone wanted to get to know your taste, what album should they listen to?

Substrata by Biosphere or It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back

  1. How did you come to work with the Soul Clap crew on this release?

I believe we first met in Detroit in 2010. I played after them at TV Lounge during the festival. We’ve loosely kept in touch all these years.

  1. Talk us through the EP a little

Simon and I were both DJing a lot in Berlin. We met at Neue Odessa Bar in Berlin Mitte where we both had residencies. The place was pretty wild and attracted characters from all walks of life in search of nice times. We were both into Funk, mid-tempo dance music and Disco. It just so happened that we were both attempting to construct music like this ourselves. Simon played me some of his original works which featured the silky smooth vocals of Idriss and I reworked them in my studio into something that I thought would work well at the bar. I’m thrilled it’s getting exposure because little projects like this rarely do. Simon and I have since worked on quite a bit of music together and are looking forward to future projects. Simon has a great studio full of all the best vintage gear for making electronic funk.

  1. This Limited 7” is for lovers of ….

Nice times, vinyl and mid(tempo)life crisis music.

  1. Where should we listen your new EP and what should we be drinking?

On your favourite turntable or on Bandcamp! The two best ways to support and enjoy music in 2022. Perhaps with some Hennessey and/or a few pints.

  1. What you got coming up in 2022?

Plenty of new music but I’m mostly looking forward to getting back into the swing of things. The past two years have been the best of times and the worst of times. I prefer the best of times.

SOUL CLAP RECORDS / EDDIE C PRESENTS L.J SIMON FT. IDRISS / RELEASED 6TH MAY – Listen / Buy here.

DJ Rocca, Chris Coco, Danielle Moore – Your Sunshine

DJ Rocca and Chris Coco continue their quest to define their version of music to play at an imaginary Discoteca. Here they team up with Danielle Moore, the singer for Crazy P, for a hazy, summery mid tempo groove that takes you off to an unspecified, loved-up sunshine state. There’s an album of dub house electro afro disco tracks that’s coming later in the year. The duo also plan to set up a few real life CocoRocca Discoteca events in summer 2022. An essential double pack of deep, dreamy rhythm and melody, equally at home at the beach or the club. Buy via Bandcamp (see link below to listen / buy) and all good online services.

Emerge – Ataurean

This is the first release on Chris Coco’s label DSPPR from Ataurean. The EP features four tracks of downtempo chilled vibes with rolling synth arpeggios, guitars, mandolin, piano and lush pads.

Atuarean says:

‘I’ve tried to combine different genres/styles into something that you can hopefully shut your eyes and get lost in!

Here are some clips of recent interviews to give you a little view into Ataurean’s world:

Can you tell us where are you from / how you got into music?
I’m from the Black Isle in the north of Scotland but now live in Edinburgh. I started playing the violin in primary 4 and then the guitar and mandolin and have always been writing tunes whether in bands or lately on my own in the studio.

Who have been your main inspirations? And how have they affected your sound?
My sound has been inspired by the likes of Boards of Canada and Orbital. plus the chill out scene in Ibiza – Pikes, Café del Mar, Hostal la Torre etc.

What was the first thing that attracted you to the world of electronic music?
The band I was playing in split up and I really enjoyed the studio aspect of recording so I decided to start my own set up so I could continue to write and record music using digital replacements for the other band members!

Do you remember an album that has changed everything?
Boards of Canada’s ‘Music Has the Right to Children’ & Chemical Brothers, Dig You Own Hole started me off on my electronic music journey.

What’s the one bit of kit or software you’ll never get rid of?
The obvious piece of software to keep would have to be Ableton. Other than that, it would be my 72 telecaster custom where all my tunes start off.

EP released March 11, 2022 via Bandcamp

Viajes Orgaizados – Residentes Balearicos

Essential new music via Ibiza and Brighton..

Dr Rob’s got the words: ‘The White Isle`s Residentes Balearicos come bouncing back with a debut EP, Viajes Orgaizado, for Brighton`s Higher Love Recordings. The super prolific Italian duo of Luca Averna and Ale Doretto, who’ve now made Ibiza their home, have previously released music, across a range of tempos – from serene sunset shuffles to nocturnal, psychedelic, shamanic shakedowns. Gracing labels such as Shades Of Sound, Music For Dreams, Balearic Ensemble, and Takeo Toyama`s Archipelago. Noteworthy names such as Joe Morris and Robin Lee`s Rudy’s Midnight Machine have remixed the results, while they frequently collaborate with current king of “chillout”, Melodica`s Chris Coco. This fresh four-track outing finds the friends fashioning two new tunes, each given an additional guest “twist”.

D110 starts with a solid rock drum battery, quickly joined by characteristically bionic “balearicos” bass. Ripe with ravey synth signals, and filled with flickering frequencies, the track taps directly into their Italo disco roots. Its sleazy, suggestive, stomping novo new beat, countered by breakdowns of cute cascading bells and chimes – raining prettily above the punchy, pumping, pounding. Mancunian musician James Bright, himself a Higher Love veteran – as well as working with imprints such as Sveva, Quattro, and Eclectics – smooths out the still banging, gargantuan groove. Manufacturing melody from masked marimba and energetic, particulate, ping-ponging patterns, while making excellent use of echo to build, and release, tension.

Juno’s Dream is technologically tribal. Its robotic rhythm rising and falling hypnotically, while grounded by more “organic” finger clicks. The warm, womb-like, constantly mutating, bottom-end, an homage to both acid house and bleep. Bali-based Liverpudlian Joey Fiztgerald, aka Gold Suite adds trippy gated sequences, and bonus human hand percussion, in the shape of bongos and congas. Then tops this off with huge rushing waves, swirls, of stirring, emotive, synthetic strings.’

Out now via Bandcamp and all streaming services
